“I love to tell the story of Jesus and His glory,
I love to tell the story of Jesus and His love…”
This stanza, from one of my favorite hymns, reminds me of a story – of experiencing God’s unconditional love – at Casa this past summer. One day, I helped in the Nursery, where there were 26 precious babies, ranging in age from 1-23 months. The teachers had lined them up in high chairs, swings, baby seats and playpens, and they were ready to eat lunch.
In one odd moment, I found that I was the lone adult in the room. The babies looked at me and then all around, searching for a familiar face. One-by-one, they all began to cry, and the crying got louder and louder!
“Oh Lord, help me!” I prayed desperately. Suddenly, I started singing. I sang whatever popped into my head – “Rock-a-bye Baby” and “Old MacDonald” – over and over. Immediately, all of the babies stopped crying. They looked at me with surprise and disbelief – some even smiled – but all eyes were on me! They listened as the songs flowed out from the Nursery and throughout the entire daycare.
In that moment, I felt God’s presence. The Good Shepherd was taking care of His flock. I knew right then that my purpose at Casa was not only to experience God’s love, but also to give His love away. (You don’t even have to speak Spanish to share God’s love – ha!)
The very next day, children of all ages ran around the playground, merrily singing “E-I-E-I-O.” I chuckled to myself, at the thought of all of us experiencing and giving away God’s love. What a privilege – and a blessing! “I love to tell the story…”
