Craig Morton

Volunteer Craig

Craig Morton came to the Hogar de los Angeles from Austin, Texas where he worked in several different businesses but now focuses on traveling and recording his experiences through photography. Craig worked in the kitchen at the Daycare location in the San Antonio. For the month of January he helped make meals for the children, teachers and a plethora of volunteers who came through the daycare during that time. Craig enjoyed the work and got along very well with MarĂ, the head cook, despite their language barrier.

There has been a large Mexican influence throughout Craig’s life as several members of his family are Mexican or have spent time in the country. He grew up in San Antonio Texas and was witness to the racism against Hispanic people in his hometown. As he grew older he moved to the city of Guanajuato, working in the strawberry fields there and exploring the area on his motorcycle.

Craig viewed his current trip to Mexico as a new chapter in his life, and his experience at the Daycare as an enhancement of his time there. He first heard about the Hogar de los Angeles four years ago when a friend introduced him to Donna Quathamer. Craig immediately recognized her positive influence and the value of the organization she described to him. He believes that women are the backbone of the Mexican country, with their cottage industries and determination. So he recognized the value of them being able to bring their babies to the daycare as it makes their experience that much more manageable. On a personal level, Craig also appreciated the daycare as an opportunity to structure his own days doing something worthwhile while he spent a month in San Miguel.

Craig reflects that one only becomes worldly by visiting and interacting with other cultures; something that he feels was exemplified by his time at the Daycare. For this reason he wants to return to the Daycare in order to help in a more meaningful way. His children are also very interested in working with the organization, which Craig feels is a great way for them to appreciate and be a part of the global community.
